“Free Range” birds coming soon

We have purchased some electric netting fence for our Turkeys and possibly some chickens to run free range in. The fence is 50m long so they will have lots of room to run. the idea of the netting is to keep birds in and help prevent predators from eating them! We can move the fence as needed and they will have a safe indoor spot to return to each night for roosting.

New Pasture to be built

We are about to build a new pasture for our pork. The area is about 30 acres and it is 1 mile around. There is lots of ground for the for the pigs to dig up here. The idea is that we will put out a bunch of bales and they will farrow in there, then we will wean them in the fall close to the first killing frost.

Pasture Poultry: 1000 chickens and 100 Turkeys Arrive!

On May 12, our pasture chickens arrived. It was very cold (-2) so keeping the shop warm was a challenge despite our preparations. We ended up putting tarps over top and heaters in under the tarps. It worked very well so far. Our new brooding cages with their drip watering systems seem to be working very well.

Pasture Pork: Bred Females Arrive

We just purchased 12 bred guilts from the Gladstone area, they should farrow in June/July. We also purchased 2 older ones from the Swan Lake area and are expecting 2 more through the Heiffer program to arrive soon. That will bring us up to 20 bred females. That means we will have a pile of little piggies running around very soon!

Free Range birds in the works

We have ordered 100 Turkeys to try free range production. We will probably also try 50 or 100 chickens this way too. We’ll see what happens. We plan to keep them in using electric poultry netting, and they will have a shelter to go in at night.

Grain Operation Expanded

We are getting geared up for spring seeding. This year we will be planting approximately 170 acres of winter wheat, 100 acres of fall Rye, 835 acres of canola, 220 acres of barley and 135 acres of red spring wheat.

Pasture Pork Operation to Expand

We are currently talking with a few farmers about getting some bred sows and guilts. Hopefully these will farrow in June. More details to come soon!

Pasture Chickens Ordered

We have just placed our order for 1000 chickens from Berg’s Hatchery. They will be arriving on May 12.

Buying Club Started

We have just joined up with some other farmers through the Harvest Moon Society in Clearwater. Together, we have started a buying club. While this sort of thing is common in other places like Oregon, it is kind of rare here in Manitoba. My brother, Colin and his wife Jenny have worked very hard to get this started. …tell your friends!

The first buying club “pick up” date is July 17th.
